New research published in The Lancet in 2026 provides strong evidence of the impact of the HPV vaccination programme in England. The study found that among women aged 20–24 who had been offered the HPV vaccine at age 12–13, there were no deaths from cervical cancer between 2020 and 2024, compared with around 23 deaths that would have been expected based on historical rates. Researchers estimate that HPV vaccination was associated with preventing around 200 cervical cancer deaths in England by the end of 2024. The findings highlight the important role HPV vaccination can play in protecting young people now and reducing their risk of HPV-related cancers in the future.
